Chopsticks

Have you ever been to P.F. Changs or a different Chinese restaurant? Well, have you noticed the chopsticks? Here’s the history of chopsticks and how to use them.

The first chopsticks were developed over 5000 years ago in China. When people cooked over fires they used sticks to get the food over and away from the fire. As resources thinned people would cut food into smaller pieces to save firewood because the smaller amounts cooked faster. Soon chopsticks became more and more common.

Confucius taught, “The honorable and upright man keeps well away from both the slaughterhouse and the kitchen. And he allows no knives on his table.” People decided to use chopsticks instead of knives so they could follow Confucius.

By 500 A.D., chopsticks had spread from China to other countries such as Korea, Vietnam and Japan. Japan started out using them only for religious purposes but they eventually started to use them commonly. Chopsticks became widespread in the rest of Asia in no time.

Chopsticks come in all shapes and sizes, from engraved golden chopsticks to disposable bamboo chopsticks. Bamboo tends to be the most popular material to make them from. There is lots of it in Asia, it is easy to split and it is especially resistant to heat. Sometimes they were also made of wood and bone, and chopsticks made of rare metals were not out of the ordinary. It was believed that silver chopsticks would turn black upon contact with poisoned food but this is not true.

Chinese chopsticks are called Kuai-Zi, which means “quick little fellows”. It has been said by using chopsticks it improves memory. Many Asian myths revolve around chopsticks as well. For example, if you find an uneven pair at your seat, it is believed that you will miss the next train, boat or plane you are trying to catch. Also, dropping your chopsticks is a sign of bad luck.

Chopsticks have a long and colorful history. Almost as colorful as these two sentances. Next time you encounter an ordainary object maybe you should research and what might have been a boring object can become something fun and intresting to learn about.

May the chopsticks be with you!!!!!

Rebellion

By: Michael A

Prologue:
It’s 2199. The rebels prepare to fight for their rights. The civilian population is discreetly supporting the rebels in spite of U.S. crackdowns on people helping the rebels.  Young people across the country are making a choice: rebels or the U.S.  The war has already begun.

Chapter One:

It was dinnertime. Evan sat at the table. His mom gave him his plate. It was pizza, his favorite. “Evan,” she said, “are you sure you want to join the army?”

“Yup,” Evan said, “I need to do what’s right.”

“Fine but be careful okay? I don’t know what I would do if you got killed.”

“I get it, I get it I’m going and that’s it,” Evan said.

On the day that he left his whole family was there. They wished him good-bye and good luck.  “Good luck, you’re gonna need it,” said his uncle.

It was a long journey to the base. First a two hour plane trip that was searched twice for any problems and then a four hour bus trip with flak jackets and several stops for the bomb squad to search for any bombs and then they stopped in the middle of nowhere and set up tents for the night, most of which were holey not to mention it rained! Then the next day after two bus rides, a train ride and a around a billion pat downs at check points they finally drove past a sign with barbed wire all around it.

It said: No trespassers. This is a military base. Military personnel only!!! Intruders will be shot!!! Once they passed the sign they caught sight of a concrete wall with barbed wire on top. Behind that watch towers shown powerful beams of light down on them as they drove by into a pair of metal gates guarded by five soldiers and an officer.

“New recruits huh?” said the officer.

“Yup,” said the commander that had been with them.
Chapter Two:

It was dark. Suddenly an explosion pierced the night. Then screams. It was midnight in New York when a rebel car bomb exploded near an army base.  Evan, a grunt in the army, and his team moved out. When they got to the sight of the bomb blast, rebels and army troops were fighting against each other with guns. Meanwhile firemen and paramedics were pulling soldiers out of the rubble.
Evan’s team had their objective, to distract the rebels from the paramedics and firefighters so they could do their job. Evan pulled out a clip for his M16. He fired a burst in the air and several nearby rebels ran.
Later after the battle Evan was lying in his bunk.  Why exactly am I doing this? He thought. He had been thinking about deserting these past couple days since he saw his commanding officer order the execution of two innocent civilians who were out past curfew. The laws that were destroying so many of the normal citizens’ rights were being strengthened. The laws were getting out of hand.

Chapter Three:

The next night Evan decided to desert. He snuck out of the camp and met with a rebel spy who got him to the rebel headquarters. “Welcome!” said the rebel officer who gave him a rebel camo suit.

As soon as he could Evan e-mailed his parents to tell them about him joining the rebels.  Their reaction surprised Evan. He had expected them to be mad. Instead they said they had been hoping he would desert for a while.

In the rebel camp, life was good. The food was way better then the MREs-Meals Ready to Eat that Evan was used to eating. That night he slept in a real bed and ate real food for the first time since he was assigned to the frontline.
The next day they went out to raid an U.S. supply center while some troops detonated explosives to distract the guards. Evan and other rebels snuck in, got the food and planted explosives. At the base they feasted on the food they had stolen.
Chapter Four:
The next day Evan and his team ran into a U.S patrol. Gunfire rang out. The rebel heading the team had shot one of the two U.S. patrolmen.  The other one was shell-shocked.  What Evan saw shocked him. The shell-shocked patrolman was his old friend in the army! His name was Eric. “Eric? Eric? Are you okay?”
“Evan?! What are you doing here? Where have you been?”
Evan hesitated. “Well I hate to tell you this but I deserted.”
“WHAT!!!!!!!!!! Why did you desert?”
“The U.S. army is bad, don’t you see? Normal citizens have become more like hostages! This isn’t right Eric. It’s just not right.”
“ I see then. I want to join the rebels. Now that I think about it you’re right.”
Epilogue
Twenty years later. The rebels have won. A new, fair government has been created. The U.S. is peaceful again.

Later that morning he went out on one of the most hated tasks of the day, patrol. The patrols were ridiculous. They barely accomplished anything!
Later after the battle Evan was lying in his bunk.  Why exactly am I doing this? He thought. He had been thinking about deserting these past couple days since he saw his commanding officer order the execution of two people who were out past curfew. Evan had been on call for a while since a rebel fighter plane going 350Mph hit the Pentagon. It had been like 911 all over again. Hundreds of people had been killed and the President of the U.S. declared war on the rebels. So now he was here.
Ever since that time the laws that were destroying so many of the normal citizens rights were being strengthened. The laws were getting out of hand.

Cheese was first made when supposedly an Arab merchant was traveling and had brought milk with him. It was in a pouch made from sheep stomach. The hot sun beat down on the pouch and activated some enzymes in the sheep stomach. And so the luckiest merchant in the world discovered cheese!

The earliest record of cheese came from Sumer. As cheese became popular in Italy it became less popular in the middle age Europe. Cheese arrived in America as soon as the Mayflower landed. It soon became a staple of the American diet. For a long time, cheese was produced individually by local farms until the appearance of the first cheese factory.

The first cheese factory came around in Oneida County, NY in 1851 and was started by Jesse Williams who began the mass production due to demand for purely awesome cheese. See look, even back then Americans liked cheese!!!

In 2003, the top three world cheese producers were: 1.European Union with 5.5 million metric tons of cheese, 2.The United States with 4.0 million metric tons of cheese, and 3.Brazil with 500,000 million metric tons of cheese.

The European Union and the U.S. are also the leading consumers of cheese. We Americans sure do love are cheese! Currently, about one third of the milk produced in the U.S. each year is used in the manufacturing of cheese. Since it comes from milk, cheese contains a massive amount of almost all of the valuable nutrients found in milk! So you should always eat cheese!! And there you have it, the best documentary about cheese ever! (I think)

The Battle for Stalingrad was fought during the winter of 1942 to 1943 in Russia. In September 1942, the German commander of the Sixth Army, General Paulus, was ordered by Hitler to take Stalingrad.  The German army that was attacking had 1,011,500 troops, 10,290 pieces of artillery and 675 tanks. The Russians had 1,000,500 troops, 13,541 pieces of artillery and 894 tanks. The Germans got stuck fighting for months because the Russians regrouped and defended Stalingrad. The Germans ended up losing even though they started with the advantage.
