All About Ladybugs

June 6, 2011 @ 4:54 PM 14 Comments

Our new Chime In Poem for the week is all about ladybugs. Before reading the poem, students had to share what they already knew about ladybugs. The children used a variety of tools to share their thoughts in both pictures and words. We hope that you’ll have a look at this slideshow, and then leave a comment here telling us what you know about ladybugs.

Thanks for helping us learn!

Hello Gr. 1 class and Mrs.A. Dunsiger
I love your work on lady bugs. I was very interested in your pictures and all the tools you used to learn more about lady bugs.
I learned that Lady Bugs have 6 legs and 2 antenae. They also like to eat little green bugs called aphids. I really like lady bugs and when I was little we believed it was lucky to have a lady bug in your house.
Have fun discovering more about Lady Bugs and other adventures. Looking forward to reading all of your blog posts and ideas.
    Have a great day,

Oh my goodness I have learned so much about ladybugs! I can also tell you I just researched ladybugs in Hawaii and they can be found but they are not red or orange with black spots. Ladybugs are a dark blue and look almost black! That’s what I know about ladybugs!
    Aloha,
    Mrs. Jacobs

What a great project you made. You certainly learned a lot about lady bugs. In Denmark where I am from, if a lady bug lands on your hand you get to blow on it. If it flies away you get to make a wish, that is what I know about lady bugs. OH and in Wisconsin we have something called asian beetles that look a lot like lady bugs except they are orange and they bite.

    Nice job kids!

We listened and read your slide show. We watched a short clip on from Discovery about ladybugs. We learned that ladybugs have strong jaws so they can eat aphids. There are 350 different types of ladybug species in North America. The red ladybugs have 7 spots. The yellow ladybugs have 21 spots. Aphids damage plants so gardners like ladybugs. We also read a non fiction book titled Ladybugs. We learned that the eggs are yellow. The larvae are black. The larvae molts its skin four times before it turns into a pupa. Then it splits open and an adult ladbug crawls out.
The adult is yellow with no dots. The ladybugs rests and hardens. It changes colour. It turns red and black. Ladybugs hibernate during the winter.
We had fun learning about ladybugs. We look forward to hearing about what you learned.

I learned that ladybugs can spray thick jell and it eats aphids and don’t spray poison on aphids because it will poison the plant to.
