This week we will start a new reading assignment. You will get to choose from 5 different books. Your task is to figure out how many chapters to read each day in order to complete the book in  10 school days. If you get behind you will have 2 weekend to get caught up. For each chapter you will need to make a blog entry with a summary of that chapter. Very short summaries will not be accepted, I will send it back to you to revise. Your grade will be based on the ability of your Blog to give the reader a visual image of what is happening in your book. Make sure you also add the proper TAG to your post so it can be sorted into the correct heading. If you are unsure how to TAG please see me.

Your title on each post should be: The Name of Your Book-The Chapter you are posting about.  Example:       Old Yeller– Chapter 1

Each chapter should have it’s own post. So if your book has 30 chapters, you will have 30 posts.

You also need to leave constructive comments on at least 10 other students Blogs.

These Blog entries are in addition to the project that you choose to do for your book. Remember you only have until the 19th of December to complete the Book, Your Project and the Blog entries. Don’t forget my favorite saying “USE YOUR TIME WISELY”

We’ve come to the end of week one in our Blogging experience. Please comment on how you like doing this, good, bad, indifferent. It seems everyone is doing a great job. I have not yet taken a tally to see who has contributed and who has not contributed. Everyone had a chance today in the lab, so we should have at least one entry from each person.

Some of you are struggling with inferences. Here is a link for you to try. LA Sqworl  This is my Language Arts Sqworl. There is a Battleship game to play that allows you to practice your inferences.

I think this has been a successful week and look forward to starting Week 2 on Monday. Can’t wait to see the movie!!

Happy Blogging!

Summary: Today we read chapters 1-3. We met the main characters in our story. A young girl Karana and her brother were gathering roots when they spotted a ship heading towards the island.

The ship was an Aleut ship with Russian sailors and a captain named Orlov. They wanted to hunt otter on the Island of the Blue Dolphins. Many years earlier the people of Ghalas-at had a very bad experience with this group of people so the natives were not happy to see them again.

Chief Chowig agreed to Captain Orlov’s proposal and the Russians began hunting otter.

The people of Ghalas-at thought they were getting good fortune when they found a lot of sea bass washed up on the shore. After collecting and eating some the Russians came and wanted the natives to share their good fortune. Chief Chowig said no.

Interesting: The part of the reading today that I thought was interesting was when they saw the Aleut ship coming on the horizon. They tried to guess what it was before they realized it was a ship or a large canoe as Ramo said.

Infer: I think the Aleuts are not to be trusted. I think they will try to cheat Chief Chowig out of his share of otter.

Anticipate: I did not think the Russians would approach the Chief and ask if they could have some of their fish.

Welcome to our Classroom Blog.

For our first assignment we will be leaving comments and summaries for the book we are reading, “Island of the Blue Dolphins”. Students should be posting each day on what they thought was an interesting part that we read, make an inference and something they did not anticipate that happened. Students should also visit another students blog and leave a positive or constructive comment.
