Our Experiment- Separating a mixture

In science, our class was challenged to separate a mixture of gravel, salt, and diatomaceous earth. We had to use a series of filters, screens, and much more. This is how we did it.

1. Get the materials:

  • screen
  • coffee filter
  • three cups
  • a beaker of water
  • a mixture of salt, diatimaceous earth, and gravel
  • standing funnel
  • evaporating tin

2. Put the screen over one cup and pour the mixture over it. The mixture will separate, but only the gravel will be separated. There will be some salt and diatamaceous earth still on the screen, so pour some of the water on to it.

3. Pour the gravel into a cup.

4. Set up the standing funnel. After it is set up, put the coffee filter it the funnel. Stand a cup under it so the water and remaining things pour into it. Pour the mixture of salt, water, and diatimaceous earth into the funnel with the filter. The diatimaceous earth should be on the filters. It is separated.

5. Mix the salt into the water and then pour it out on an evaporating tin.

6. It will take a couple days for the water to evaporate, so you just have to wait.

There you go! All your materials should be separated, or on their way to being separating. If you try this experiment, tell me and my group how it goes!

    Hello Guys,
I think you guys set it up the best because, You guys went really well explaining materials. The Procedure is detailed and says how to do it thoroughly. Nice Job!

I like how much more detail you went into than your class mates did. high 5!!!!

Hello Kyra, Michael, and Jacob. I like your procedures because it tells us what to do in detail so we know not to miss anything. Also because I understand what your telling me to do.

Your blog is the easiest to follow. The steps were not too long, and not too short and they were simple.

Kyra, this post is wonderful! It is by far the best one I have read, and is very clear too. You clearly stated how to do it without using too many steps. I too, have done a lot of science experiments where you must write the steps, and this is about picture perfect! Well done! Here is a link to my blog:

Hello Kyra I like your scientific method better because it clearly says the procedures and it tells you step by step. This also makes it easier to understand the project.

Hi Kyra! I really liked how you listed the materials and all the procedures. They were well organized. If I were doing this experiment I would look at your procedures because they are very easy to understand.

This is a great post it’s really detailed and it’s obvious that you knew that you should pour water on it to get the rest of the salt and diatomaceous earth.
