How Do You Separate Diatamaceous Earth, Gravel, and Salt

In science my class did a challenge where Mrs.Ripp gave us a mixture of diatomaceous earth, gravel, and salt and challenged us to separate it.  We had to plan out what we were doing and write down our steps.  Our group did wrote down the steps to do it.  Below are the steps we did.

1.  Get the mixture

2.  Grab screen filter, coffee filter, water, tripod, syringe, and petri dish

3.  Mix water into mixture, then mix.  Now its a solution

4.  Pour the mixture into screen filter, to separate the gravel

5.  Put gravel into a separate cup

6.  Set coffee filter in tripod

7.  Pour the solution into the coffee filter to separate the diatomaceous earth

8.  Put the coffe filter into a separate cup

9.  Fill syringe with 50 ml. of water

10.  Pour 25 ml. of water into 2 separate pea try dishes

11.   Pour salt mixture into the same 2 peatry dishes with the water

12.  Set on vent

That’s the process.  Our group was Ava, Matthew, David, and me.  The water will evaporate in the dish, leaving crystals.  Now its all separated.

I iked this post the best out of the five because I think it was easy to follow , and if I needed to , i could use these directions if I wanted to do this project.

I think your scientific method is the best because, your directions are clear and it explains the experiment really well.

Your post is very easy to follow and read! Sounds like a really neat experiment. I wonder what color your crystals will be?

Well Sophia, I think you had written your procedure out very organized it was very understandable too. I also think that it would be easy to look at your procedures and do that experiment.

I think your procedure is very neat and organized. You didn’t write too much to where you get lost in the words, but were simple enough to find what needs done.

Your experiment is the best and is very easy to follow your steps:), I think that you well do a good job with what kind of crystal it is that your making. Keep it up!

Your groups procedure is the best out of five to me because it’s very well organized and in the procedure it shows all what it is needed to separate Diatamaceous Earth, Gravel, Salt in your groups experiment.

Your procedures for this experiment are very anecdotic and easy to understand, and if someone wanted to they could follow the procedures and replicate the experiment and more than likely come out with the same results.
