This year, our wonderful principal, Mr.Rykal, is retiring. The question for this week is………..What do principles really do? Well, when I first heard this question, I thought “Well that’s easy, they run the school.” But there is a lot more behind running a school.

I think one of the most important skills for a principal is communication. To be a successful principal like Mr.Rykal, you have to know how to interact well with students and teachers. If a student has done something wrong and is sent to the principal, the principal has to know how to figure out the problem by communicating with the student. Also, if a teacher doesn’t understand how to teach a lesson, they probably usually contact the principal and the principal should know how to give a good explanation. You need to be great at communication to be a principal.

That was just one of the skills you probably need to become a principal. A principal also runs the whole school. I’m guessing when they run the whole school they have to….

  • Plan the subjects a teacher teaches each day
  • Choose how long the teach that subject
  • Choose when each grade has specials or recess
  • Plan when classes go on feild trips
  • Decide what they can have in their classroom (Like computers and smart boards)
  • Choose when we have our lunch
  • Plan when assemblies are
  • Interview new teachers for jobs
  • Decide which teacher kids get in the beginning of the year

That’s my guess at what a principle does. If anybody has anymore input, tell me! I’m curious to see what you guys think a principal does.

Have you ever realized how wonderful blogging is? I definitely have. When I first came to fifth grade in Mrs.Ripp’s class I thought What in the world is blogging?  Shortly after our first day of school, we started learning about internet safety and how to blog. I didn’t quite understand it still. But when I first got on my blog and typed my first post, I thought This is pretty cool. I was still a little unsure about it, and I wasn’t really getting the point yet.  But then, when I typed my second blog post, The Art of Sushi, something clicked. Really! You could blog about anything! I then realized what a privilege this was. Also, besides being awesomely fun, blogging was also educational. It has stretched my imagination to think outside the box and it helped me become the writer I am today. The challenges we got really made me think too. My writing has been getting better and better every time I blog. Mrs.Ripp, we should absolutely keep blogging! Also, thank you for giving us this huge privilege to blog. It’s such a unique way to improve our writing, and not many classes get to do it! Thank you for this wonderful opportunity.

This weeks blogging challenge is (drum roll please) If you could change one school rule what would it be? I would change the rule saying  we can only watch G-rated movies. I think we should be able to watch PG-rated movies if we are in 4th grade and up if the teacher has checked it over. Some PG-rated movies aren’t that bad, they only use some mild language that 4th and 5th graders can probably handle. If a teacher thinks their class can’t handle the movie, than they can just not play it.  Sometimes when I was in fourth grade when we would read books we couldn’t watch the movies because they were rated PG. And they used the same language in the book as they did in the movie! But this rule is a good rule for schools. People are just trying to be cautious so we don’t run into anything that is not school appropriate.

What is the real purpose of education? This question made me think. Because if there was no education, then people would have a  hard time having  jobs like engineers, scientists, or even cooks.  I think that the purpose is to make our lives a little easier. Even a little reading could have a big impact on our lives. For example, if you were a cook and you didn’t have a clue how to read, it would be really hard to look at cook books! And imagine! If you couldn’t read, you wouldn’t be reading my blog right now! And also, when people invented math and numbers, or reading and writing, they probably wanted everyone to know how to do it, but how? Teaching! And education! The purpose of education is so you don’t have to go through life without knowing how to read, write, do math, or any other important skill that you will need in your life.
