“Home of dreary raincoats and unnecessary sportswear?”

Page 5 in the book Falling in by Frances O’roark Dowell.

I would think that someone showed a person what she had to wear in a closet and inside there were raincoats and sportswear. Then the person said this should be called the home of the dreary raincoats and unnecessary sportswear because she didn’t like it. The next thing you know they made a store out of it. The next day they were in the newspaper and saying that this was the most honest store.

Francie, a character in the book Francies Fortune lives in Hollywood and has to spend the whole summer with her grandmother. Her grandmother lives in a town called Fortune. Fortune is a very small town and they have a dirt road and all the houses are very small. Francie is not use to small houses, dirt road, and a small town.

Francie is not like me because she is afraid of getting dirt on her self and she doesn’t know how to ride a bike. When Francie is trying to ride a bike she is afraid she is going to fall and get dirt on her self. Francie doesn’t know how to ride a bike because in the book she says in Hollywood they don’t need a bike. Francie is like me because she is brave and willing to try new things. When a mountain lion is right above her she doesn’t run away and scream. At least not the second time. When Francie tells her grand mother about the mountain lion she tells her to step away slowly not to run away and scream. Then next time she saw it she did what her grandmother told her.

My Mom loves to read. She reads every night before bed. She usually reads for forty five minutes and sixty pages. My mom reads newspapers, books, magazines, on her ipad. My mom likes to read fiction and historical fiction. Her favorite book when she was a kid was Tom Sawyer. Her favorite book now is Scent of Rain and Lightening.  When my mom is reading she is picturing a movie. She often relates to the characters. This makes the book more interesting to her. My mom’s parents read to her at night. That’s why she stated reading when she was five. My mom’s father loved and loves to read. Her mother doesn’t. A good memory from reading was sitting on the beach in Jamaica reading and not thinking about anything else. A bad memory of reading for my mom was starting a book club book and not liking the book they were reading. My mom has abandoned many books because they was boring and because she didn’t like it. What distracts my mom about reading is having to do laundry. After she finishes a good book, she usually waits several days before starting a new one. Reading class for my mom when she was a kid was like sitting on the floor and talking about a book. If my mom had a choice between reading a book first or watching the movie she would pick reading the book. When she reads, a movie is going on inside of her head. She encourages her kids to read by example. If we see her reading, we will read more. When I was little my mom read to me every night. The first book my mom ever read to me was It’s Time for Bed by Mem Fox.  The first book I read by my self was Clementine. My mom thinks reading helps her with her vocabulary and writing. And I agree!

The main character, Clementine in the book Clementine is very funny and gets in to a lot if trouble. Clementine is eight years old. She is very messy. Her dad calls under her bed a big black hole because every thing she has is mostly under there. She has a brother, a mom, and a dad. Her brother is three years old.

I think Clementine is like me because she is crazy and funny. I am crazy and funny only when I am at home or somebody’s house I know really well. Clementine is funny because she calls her brother a vegetable name. She calls her brother a vegetable because her name is a fruit and she doesn’t thinks it fair. She is also funny when she asks to go to the principles office even when she isn’t in trouble. And she says she is allergic to sitting still. My brothers think I am funny when I try to annoy  them. Sometimes I actually annoy them.

I think Clementine isn’t like me because she is not shy at all and she gets in trouble. When Clementine wants to help  painters paint she starts asking without thinking about being shy or getting in trouble. I don’t get in trouble that much and I am shy around people I don’t know  that much. I would never ask to go to the principles like she does.

Clementine has a great personalty. If could be her for one day definitely would.

The book The Mysterious Benedict Society is about a boy named Reynie who lives in a orphanage. Reynie is really smart. Reynie sees an ad in the newspaper about a test so he enters it and only four people pass it. The four people who make it are a girl named Kate, a boy named stinky, a girl named Constance, and Reynie. All of them go on a secret mission.

My favorite character in this book is Constance. Constance is one of the people who passes the test and goes on a the secret mission. Constance is rude, stubborn, and selfish. Constance is my favorite character because she is funny when she is not trying to be.  My least favorite character in the book is number two. Number two is a woman who helps the group of people who past the test. Number two’s name is called number two because she doesn’t want anyone to know her real name. Number two is tired, messy, and serious. I don’t like her because she is too serious about things. When the kids are trying to have fun she ruins it. I sometimes think she makes everyone else serious.

Some questions I have for the author is how did you come up with this idea about the test and why does every kid live an orphanage or ran away?
