Hiccup Horrendous Haddock the Third is the main character in  a book called How to Train your Dragon by Cressida Cowell. Hiccup was not an ordinary Viking. He was short, small, thin and not muscular. He was the son of chief Stoick the Vast and the heir to the Tribe of the Hairy Hooligans.

The story takes place a long time ago on the Isle of Berk, separated from the Meathead Islands by the Inner Ocean. Hiccup lived in the Hooligan Village located in the center of the Isle of Berk.

Every person in the Hairy Hooligan tribe had to obtain a dragon by the age of ten or younger. If they failed to do so they would surely be exiled and eaten by cannibals.

Fishlegs was Hiccup’s only good friend. He was small, clumsy and wore an oversized helmet. Hiccup managed to get his dragon Toothless but he too was unusually tiny.

Because Hiccup was not a typical Viking, he got picked on by eight mean boys. Their leader Snout Lout was the meanest of them all. He was tall and muscular. He had a tiny mustache and skull tattoos all over his body. Snout Lout’s right hand man Dogsbreath the Duhbrain was a fat Viking boy who also was big, muscular and mean.

I chose this book because it was highly recommended by our local librarian. She told me that many kids had read this book and liked it. When I skimmed through it I found many silly words and funny pictures of dragons and Vikings. How to Train your Dragon made me laugh so hard I could not stop reading it. All in all, I thought it was a great book and I recommend it to kids of all ages. I am already reading the next book in this series.
