The Mortal Instruments series begins with Clary Fray and her best friend Simon Lewis in a nightclub called Pandemonium, where Clary witnesses an odd trio following a boy into a backroom with weapons. She follows them and the three people were shocked that she could see them, when Simon came in after her and couldn’t see them because of their glamour. A few days later, Clary runs into one boy from the group, and also gets a call from her mother saying not to go home because something bad was going on. Clary runs home to help her mom, but comes across raveners in her mothers apartment, a type of demon. Clary then learns that she is a shadow hunter, which leads her on various journeys around New York City as she tries to find her mother to get her back with the help of Jace, Isabelle, and Alec, the three people she saw at Pandemonium. Finding her mother isn’t the only problem Clary faces. She also finds out that Valentine, a shadowhunter gone bad, is trying to find the Mortal Instruments for a reason they don’t know. Clary also finds out that Valentine is her father. . .as well as Jace’s, which complicates their relationship as they both are interested in each other. Soon after, Clary finds her mother and gets her back, but she is in a coma. This leads to book two, where everything seems to begin with chaos. After Simon’s run in with a vampire nest in the first book, and accidentally drinking some vampire blood after biting one of them out of self defense when he was turned into a rat, he begins to feel ill. After finding out that Valentine is Jace’s father, Maryse, Alec and Isabelle’s mother throws him out of the Institute for fear that he is a spy, even though Jace had no idea that his father was Valentine, but instead, Michael Wayland, which was the name Valentine went by when Jace lived with him as a child, before he was sent to the Institute to live at ten years old. Through unfortunate events, Jace is placed in a prison in the Silent City. But while he is down there, Valentin attacks and kills everyone but Jace while in search of the soul-sword. This seems curious, and doesn’t help the situation that they think Jace is a spy. Jace is summoned to the Faerie Realm, and ends up going with Clary, Simon, and Isabell. At this point, Simon and Clary are now dating, but while down there, Clary gets tricked into eating something, and the only way they she will be able to leave is if she kissed the person she most desired in front of everyone. Forced to kiss Jace in front of everyone so they could all leave, this causes Simon to be angry, and Jace and Clary to fight about their feelings and the fact that they are siblings. Soon after the fight, they find out by the vampire that Simon bit, that Simon was dying and the only way to save him would be to turn him fully into a vampire. Even with all of their personal drama going on, they manage to capture Valentine, and lock him up in the Institute. He is told that he will release the Mortal Instruments to them or Jace would get hurt, because they still think Jace had a part in this. He escapes and kidnaps Maia, a werewolf who is park of Clary’s mothers boyfriends wolfpack. Then he kidnaps Simon while he’s on the phone with Clary. Jace was locked in a cage as well, but escaped by jumping out with the abilities he was given by the Angel blood Valentine gave him as a baby. Clary discovers that she can create new runes, and gives herself a “fearless” rune before she goes to help save Simon and Maia. Valentine tortures Maia by throwing silver dust on her, and then slashes Simon’s throat. When Jace finds Simon, he is dead. But Jace feeds Simon his blood, which returned him to life, while Clary confronts Valentine. Then, she creates an “open” rune, which completely destroys the boat. While trying to get off, she falls, but is caught by Simon, who is now a vampire of a new type. He can walk in daylight. Thus ends book two, and brings it to book three. Book three starts a week after book two. Isabelle, Alec, and their mother and father, as well as Jace and Clary are all planning to leave for Alicante, the “capitol” Shadhowhunter city. Jace changes the time of the portal, and calls Simon over to ask him to tell Clary something after he left, but they are attacked, so they quickly go through the portal, even Simon who wasn’t supposed to go at all. Clary is furious when she finds out that they left without her and tells Luke, while at the hospital with her mother, that she will find a way to get there. She storms out, and creates her own portal, which is very dangerous for her. As she is walking through it, Luke grabs her, and he is also transported. They end up in Lake Lyn, where the Angel Raziel came out to make the first Shadowhunter. Clary accidentally drinks water from it, which is very toxic to Shadhowhunters. Luke pulls her out of the water and they have to walk to Alicante, while Clary begins to hallucinate fom the water. Meanwhile, Jace, Simon, and the Lightwoods (Isabell, Alec, and their parents) are in Alicante where they meet a family friends cousin, Sebastian, who Jace immediately dislikes. Simon is brought in front of the Inquisitor, for he isn’t supposed to be in Alicante. Permission is required to enter the city to anyone that goes in. The Inquisitor wants him to lie about the Lightwoods and say that they are spies for Valentine, and when he refuses, he is put in jail. During this, Clary is at Luke’s sister house just outside of Alicante, being healed and treated. She sneaks out, after Luke is already gone, and goes into Alicante. She walks in on jace kissing another girl and then leaves angrily, but not before running into Sebastian, and tells him about her mother and that she needs to find the Warlock Ragnor Fell so that she can help her get out of the coma. Sebastian then brings Clary to Ragnor Fells house the next day, but it is not Ragnor Fell there, but Magnus Bane, the Warlock from New York City that has helped them through different situations since book one. He freezes Sebastian so that he can talk to Clary privately, and tells her that the book she needs to save her mom is in the mansion that Valentine and her mother lived in when they were married, the Fairchild Manor. They then go there and find the book. Sebastian kisses Clary, but she pushes him away, and he tells her about Simon being in Jail. Clary runs into Jace and blames him for Simon being in Jail and they fight. Then she gets Jace to bring her to Wayland manor, where he grew up as a kid. They portal there, and find a half dead Angel in the basement. Ithuriel. He shows them memories from before they were born, when Valentine used his blood as an experiment while Jace was in Clary’s mom, Jocelyn’s womb. After showing them the memories, he asks for the knife they have, and kills himself. Because he was tied to the manor, when he died, the manor began to crumble and fall apart. Jace and Clary made it out safely, but lost the stele that allowed them to write runes, and had to walk all the way back to Alicante. When they reach Alicante, they see that it is up in flames, and the gates were open. The Demon wards were down, which meant anything and anyone could get into the city. Choas ensued, as Shadowhunters ran around trying to kill all the demons that rolled in. Alec leaves Isabelle in the house with their younger brother Max, and Sebastian, who kidnaps Max and hits Isabelle over the head to knock her out. Luke shows up with his werewolf pack and offer to help fight the next round of demons that was sure to come. Clary runs off with Jace and Alec to save Simon from the jail, and find that the person in the cell next to him was Hodge, the teacher at the Institute from the first book that betrayed them for Valentine. He was telling them that the third Mortal Instrument that Valentine didn’t have, was infact Lake Lyn itself, when Sebastian came up behind him and killed him, claiming that he ws defending them, when Hodge clearly was not attacking or planning to. Sebastians cover is blown, and they find out that he is working for Valentine. The three go back to the main hall, and find out that Max had been killed. Members of the Clave, the form of government that runs Shadowhunters and Downworlds, are fighthing with letting the werewolves join ranks. They dont’ trust them. It is a time of mistrust, anger, and sadness for the ones they lost. Confusion and tension for they know Valentine is going to strike again. They spend the night planning, while Clary goes to stay at Luke’s sisters house. Jace shows up and stays the night with her, telling her that even though it is wrong, he loves her. While she is sleeping, Jace slips out and goes to the hall where they are all still deciding what to do. He leaves, after having a conversation with Luke about what he can do to help. So when Clary wakes up the next morning, he is gone. She is sad, because she knows that he is going to find Valentine, but she doesn’t have much time to think about that, because her mother shows up. Before she went to save Simon the night before, she gave the book to Magnus Bane, and he disappeared during the night and brought her out of the coma. They find out that the Clave is considering surrenduring to Valentine, who’s whole purpose of the war is that Shadowhunters are the best, and that downworlders and demons should all be killed. He believes the Clave is corrupt for believing otherwise. They have until a certain time that night to make a decision. It is a long day, and everyone is saying things they wished they said earlier. But, when the time had almost come, Clary comes up with a decision. She creates a binding rune, which can bring a downworlder and a shadowhunter together so that they can share power and fight side by side. This is the answer they needed that allows them to face Valentine together. While this is going on, Jace finds Valentine, but does not make himself present. He also learns that Valentine is not his father, but instead, Sebastians. His real father was Michael Wayland, but Valentine killed him and posed as him. When Valentine leaves to go to Lake Lyn to raise the Angel and ask for power, Jace and Sebastian fight. Jace was the one given Angel blood while in his mothers womb, who was not Clary’s mom, but a different woman, and Sebastian was given demon blood while in Jocelyn’s womb. They fight, trying to kill each other. Sebastian almost kills Jace, but Isabelle shows up and saves him, and Jace in turn kills Sebastian. Back in Alicante, Clary learns of Valentines plans and goes to Lake Lyn to stop him. When she gets there he binds her in silence with a rune, and when Jace shows up, he tells Valentine that he killed Sebastian. Valentine uses Jace as a sacrifice, and kills him to summon the Angel. The Angel sees the bad in Valentine and refuses to grant his wish, but instead, grants Clary a wish. After killing Valentine, the Angel brings Jace back to life for Clary, where the story ends with Jace and Clary meeting up together at a party in Alicante, celebrating the end of the war.
