The Determined Mari
By Kaleigh Armocida
During the 1600’s, slavery was happening. African Americans were shipped over to southern states. African Americans would work for Americans. They would work in the fields from sunrise to sunset. Just like this little girl named Mari.
She worked from sunrise to sunset working in the fields plowing, chopping corn, taking care of vegetable gardens, and many other things. Each day, after a hard day of work, she would to a shared room, and fall asleep. At most times, she would have trouble falling asleep. This is mostly because she slept in a small shack with 10-12 other slaves. This is also because the small room had no electricity, furniture, or pluming.
She didn’t like being a slave. She doesn’t like where she sleeps, and, she especially doesn’t like how she gets treated most of the time. When she gets thirsty her master doesn’t give her water. And when she does something wrong she gets whipped. She doesn’t think that it’s fair to have slaves. She wonders, why can’t they just do the work themselves? And why do we have to call them master?
I selected this movie because I was very amazed that a robot could do a difficult thing that people can do. I also selected this movie because I love to sing and dance and play instruments. Guitar is one of my favorite instruments. I also selected this movie because it taught me how to play guitar. Even when it’s a robot! Now that’s amazing. I also selected this piece because I was very impressed when the little robot was supporting the guitar. That’s also impressive, considering that the robot was supporting something that was 3-4 times its own weight!
Hi, my name is Sunny the Sun. I feel very sad. Do you know why? Well, if you don’t know, then I might as well tell you. Well, here it goes…. I feel like I’m the third wheel. I feel like the third wheel because Cloudy the Cloud and I would hang out everyday until one day…. Windy the Wind came along. And that’s when it all started.
It was a sunny day, Sunny the Sun wanted someone to play with since she was all alone. So of course, she went to Cloudy the Cloud. So she went and asked Cloudy the Cloud if he would like to play in the sky. So that’s EXACTLY what they did. After a while, something strange happened. A new natural resource was made. It was called the wind. Sunny the Sun and Cloudy the Cloud weren’t sure what it was. So they went to investigate. They went through the sky, and across other clouds. And finally, they reached their destination. When they went to ask the wind what he was, apparently that’s not what the wind was called. The wind was called Windy the Wind. Anyway, Sunny the Sun and Cloudy the Cloud, and Windy the Wind were having a conversation. After a while, Sunny the Sun was getting bored. So Sunny the Sun decided that it would be a good idea to go back home. So that’s exactly what Sunny the Sun did. But Cloudy the Cloud stayed behind. And that’s how their friendship began.
But for some reason, the next day Cloudy the Cloud wasn’t anywhere in sight. Sunny the Sun was extremely worried. She didn’t know what to do. But then she figured it out, Cloudy the Cloud was at Windy the Wind’s Skyzone (his home). But Sunny the Sun wondered. Why would Cloudy the Cloud make friends with someone that they don’t even like. Stay tuned on what happens next in part 2 of Sunny the Sun and Cloudy the Cloud!
The Vernal Pool: The Vernal Pool has changed a lot since the last time we’ve been to the vernal pool. The vernal pool is as if the soil was really thirsty, and the soil tried to drink their drinks out of the vernal pool very sparingly, but they just couldn’t do it. They just couldn’t control themselves.
Erosion: I’m in the erosion group. We study erosion. We also find out answers to questions about erosion. There’s a lot of erosion on the hill at the vernal pool. The good news is, is that the erosion isn’t as bad as the erosion on the hill at THOREAU. The question is, how can we also stop erosion on the hill at the vernal pool? We have an answer to that. We can tell people to stop walking, running, and digging on the hill at the vernal pool.
Note: Classmates, may you please stop running, digging, and walking on the hill? You can always go on the pavement that is around the vernal pool. This way if you don’t run, dig, or walk on the hill, you won’t be causing erosion because you wouldn’t be wearing a surface down. Wearing a surface down is what erosion is. Thank you for your help!
Here’s a little story that I’d like to call Fish and Bugs vs people.
It was a fine afternoon in March, and kids were playing in the schoolyard, the river was flowing very nicely, the sun was shining, there was clear blue sky, with just a couple of white fluffy clouds, and there were a lot of animals and insects outside. It was as if the insects and the animals were having a “welcome summer!” party. The temperature was nearly 80 degrees fahrenheit. But the problem on that very nice and calm day, is that there were people that were invading the animals’ party. From peoples’ point of view, people think that bugs are scary and disgusting. People also think that animals sometimes get in their way. So when people came down to where the animal and the bugs’ party was, they invaded their party. People stepped on most of the bugs, and they didn’t really pay any attention to the animals. The bugs were not very happy about this investation. Neither were the animals. So they came up with a way to stop this. One was some of the fish would jump in and out of the water, and do tricks to impress the people, so that people would pay attention to them. And the bugs, well, just kept biting and annoying the people that were down at the river, to teach the people to pick on someone their own size.
The bugs- ” We creatures taught the people that they should pick on someone their own size, to love nature no matter how bad it is, and there’s room for everyone in one place.” Let’s see how people react to this situation.
The people- We humans think that we can pick on the bugs, also known as kill them. We think this because bugs are always biting us humans, and some of them sting us. And when they bite us humans, we hurt afterwards, and we itch afterwards. And us humans agree that we should not kill the bugs, no matter how annoying they can be. And us humans also think that we should not kill the bugs because they’re a part of nature, and if Mother Nature was to come a live in person, she’d be really angry. So, us humans think that we should not kill the bugs.
Warning: If you were to kill a bug, Mother Nature would not be very happy with you! So pick on someone your own size!
The Worst Day Ever

One day in my old town, and on my old street, something bad happened. You’ll find that something out at the end of the story.
It was a cloudy Saturday afternoon. My cousin Cara and I were shopping at the Solomon Pond Mall. We ate lunch at the food court, we walked around the mall, and the most fun thing of all, is that we shopped! We shopped for clothes, we shopped for sneakers, we shopped for CDs, we shopped for posters, and many more things. We were having a lot of fun at the mall. But unfortunately, we had to go home. On the way home, we were able to stop for ice cream. Until we got a call from my other cousin, Brianna. But the call that we got wasn’t what we were expecting it to be. Brianna called to tell us that Ben, my Cara’s dog, was lying on the floor, dead. But we didn’t get it. Ben was not even one years old, and my cousins didn’t give him any food that would have made Ben sick. So we took Ben to the vet to get him checked out. It turned out that Ben was dead. Everyone was so sad. Everyone was crying in horror. It turns out that Cara and my day was not so great after all.
