notch up your education

With todays possibilities that technology gives us, we can improve our learning techniques and possibilities tremendously. Darren Kuropatwa’s video “Intersections” points out several ways to do that. He tries to shows us ways to “kick it up a notch” education wise.

1. My most significant “takeaway” from this video:

What definitely made me think the most was Darren Kuropatwa’s point about space and time. Its been a long time, and i was just a child, but even I remember the times before we had cell phones. It was a completely different life just because you had to think ahead and plan everything so that you can be at the same place at the same time with certain people you want to meet. You could not just cancel things last minute or make last minute changes to plans you have with others. It made life flow a little slower.
Nowadays on the other hand, life is changing almost every second and there is a constant change to everything, because we have the opportunity to make changes. Technology connects us to each other 24/7. Plans become more insignificant cause you can always call, text, leave a voicemail, email or blog etc. to adjust your life to all the short term changes it is confronted with.
These new possibilities can be used and/or misused in pretty much any area of our lives, including education.
About 20 years ago we had to all be sitting in the same classroom at the same time the teacher was present to be able to learn what the teacher taught. Today time and space are much more independent from each other, mainly because we can create spaces at our own time. A perfect example comes from our own class. When we had the snowstorm we were all in different locations but we still met online at the “same location” at the same time. Our Elluminate online class was also recorded which gives more students the opportunity to come back to the SAME location at a DIFFERENT time but still get the same educational material.  This improvement of how we can control our time and spaces much more nowadays was most striking to me in this video.

2. How does this video relate or connect with my own experiences in life?

When I think about this video and my own experiences in the classroom I realize that there seems to be a huge gap between the possibilities that technology gives us and the use we make of it. I believe that all schools and Universities are well equipped with the necessary tools like computers in every classroom, computer labs, and projectors, as well as websites, and text alerts etc. I think what students and professors are lacking is the knowledge about how to effectively incorporate technology into the course material. technology changed so much and so fast over the last 20 years that it seems hard to keep up with your possibilities and options. That is why I find that this video shows me many many possibilities but it does not exactly relate to my personal experience in the classroom, because in most of my classes we only use technology to a small degree.
In the future though, when I become a teacher, I would like to be able to efficiently incorporate technology into the classroom. It becomes more and more important for teachers to be knowledgeable in terms of technology, because we need to raise future generations with a tremendously well developed knowledge base about technology so they do not get lost in the fast changing society.

3. ideas of this video for my own teaching practices:

The most intriguing thing i learned form Darren Kuropatwa’s video was that as a teacher you want your students to not only passively sit in a classroom, listening to you, you want them involved and engaged. Kuropatwa pointed out that it should be a goal to get students to learn from each other, and with each other. Ways to achieve this goal would be group assignments, class discussions and even correspondence between your students and other students in other classrooms, maybe via blogging, like we use our class blog to communicate with each other over topics related to our course material.
I also learned that it can be tremendously helpful to students to give them easy access to many helpful resources. It is way more helpful to have access to your teachers syllabus, assignments, and lessons plans  online, where you can access it on your own time and in your own space. Making it easier for students to access information, will make it easier for them to learn effectively.

This is a phenomenal reflection, and one of the best which has been written in our class this semester so far. You thoroughly explored each question and provided great elaboration for all your points. I like how you used hyperlinks and images as well. I agree the snow storm challenges we’ve faced this term already tie in well with the encouragement Darren gave us to transcend traditional space and time boundaries!

GREAT connections, and great reflection. Keep up the good work and especially the great thinking!
