Southeast Asia is home to many different types of geography everywhere from mountains to islands. It also inhabits a multitude of cultures. As it seems, the more diverse the geography, the more diversity among people, and this proves to be true to a decently high degree. The mountains, islands, and different landforms of Southeast Asia isolate cultures and prevent them from expanding into other cultures.
Indonesia is made up of many islands separated by the natural barrier of water, and it is home to about 200 different languages due to this separation. Also, countries with limited natural resources such as Singapore, have adapted by creating a successful manufacturing industry which diversifies that culture. Countries that are almost land-bounded such are influenced by immigrants and surrounding cultures like how Thailand was under British and French influence. Altitude also affects culture especially in mountainous areas but cutting groups of people off from other groups. Rich river valleys are dominated by major ethnic groups which pushes the poorer people up mountains. This creates a society divided into classes due to the geography. However, other factors impact diversity as well. Lack of technology leads to lack of interconnection among groups which also makes it difficult for ideas to be available across a wide area. In contrast, Abundant technology and media unites people. This shows that access to technology has a role in spreading ideas or causing diversity which makes geography not the only player in the game. But geography still shows to have a greater impact.
In conclusion, the exclusive cultures of Southeast Asia such as the long-necked woman, the makers of duck blood pudding, and the shadow puppets of Indonesia, are all a product of the geography in this region. The diverse behaviors, beliefs, languages, and values are caused by the natural landforms that isolate cultures so that they do not blend, unlike the melting pot of the United States. Clearly geography impacts diversity a lot even though it is not the only contributor.
