Southeast Asia is a very diverse region, and the geography is where this diversity stems from. Culture wouldn’t exist if it weren’t for people living and adapting to their surroundings. Diversity wouldn’t exist if it weren’t for people migrating and moving all around, combining their ideas of culture together. The access a person, or a group of people, has to an area impacts the diversity of that area. For example, a group might move to the low lands verses the mountains because it is an easier area to travel to. In turn, the low lands might have more of a diverse area then the mountains.
What also effects the diversity of an area is the likelihood of making an income. Obviously people who can till a field wouldn’t go to an area full of fishing and the other way around. But depending where those farmers and fishers come from, can add different cultural aspects to that area. Also the way a person makes their living adds to the culture of that area. Some areas have multiple ways of living, like combining fishing and factories if in an urban area or combining fishing and farming if in a rural area. Then with what you make, grow, or catch effects what you eat and what size meals you have.
With these different kinds of areas, rural and urban, come different family styles as well. For example families in a rural area tend to have more children because they believed that, that meant they would have economic security. In the urban areas, it is more likely to find small families or 3 or 4 because the family has to live in a smaller home.
Geography plays a bigger role in diversity if you are looking at the whole thing. This is basically a domino effect starting with where a group starts, where to travel to, what means of living there are, and finally immersing and adapting to a new area and implementing the culture of where the group came from into the culture of that area. Something’s are easier to combine then other, obviously, like food and arts are some of the easier things to combine. Most of the art and music from Southeast Asia is very similar, very slow and precise. The food on the other hand, is very vast ranging from fish to duck to cobra.
