The Filipinos are quite nice to us, so we want to be nice to them. They are going to have a war, and I’m going to help them fight. This is harder then it sounds. The enemy out numbers us by a lot. It’s not a pretty sight.
I’m so excited. I’m the first European captain to sail this far. Many of my crew are getting a disease called scurvy, but I have pills that have lots of vitamin C. We have lost our food supplies so we have been chowing down on anything we can find, even saw dust.
Today I found a path that I think will lead us around South America. It’s been a hard journey. We have been sailing for a year and two months! I think the whole crew is sea sick. No one wants to go on deck because it’s so cold, windy, and wet.
I have been studying a new way of getting to the Spice Isleads by going west. I decided to go to Spain. I went to king Charles of Spain to ask if he could sponsor the trip. The king said ”yes,” and I started getting prepared.
Today I went to ask the king and queen to ask if I could have money to find a new route to the Spice Islands. I believe the earth is round. I want to sail west from Portugal, instead of going around Africa. I feel upset because they said “No.”
