Leaving Australia, we anchored at the island of Savu for fresh supplies. Then we sailed to Batavia or Jakarta, a Dutch settlement. Soon men started to get sick with malaria. The first to die was William Monkhouse, on November 5. The ones who died where buried at sea. One- third of the crew died. Eleven were buried in one week. This was called the bloody flux.

Nicholas Young sight land on October 6, 1769. It’s New Zealand. The people here are different from the Tahitians. The people were Moaris who are tough and brave warriors. We escape before they attack and open fire, killing several of us. January 18, 1770 Lieutenant Hicks sights land. It was Australia. I was the first person to chart the whole east coast.

The Endeavor is a ship we got to sail in on our journey. The Endeavor is described as “fit to stow provisions and stories.” It is one hundred and six feet long, twelve feet across, eleven feet deep. The Endeavor sailed to Tahiti via South America first. The Endeavor is packed with food for twelve months, so every year we stop at an island for supplies. Our ship reaches it’s first destination on April 13.

My name is James Cook, and I’m going on an expedition. Some people call me captain as a courtesy. Some facts to get by on your long trip, and this is what I learned. Make friends with your shipmates so travel will be much easier. Obey orders or you’ll get flogged. Which is getting whipped with a special whip called the “cat-o-nails.” Don’t be like Henry Stephens got flogged twelve times for not eating his meat. So eat your meat!
