Wow, it’s hard to believe so much time has passed since my last post! We have been so busy!
Today the class was given a little more time to wrap up the volcano projects. Please take a look at them, and add your comments!
Last Tuesday many of us headed off to Douglas Park for the Gr. 5-8 track meet. George Lee was one of 5 schools participating. It was a wonderful day, with great weather! Many of our students received medals for their outstanding athleticism!
Yesterday we made our own edible rocks in class, in an effort to help better remember the three kinds of rocks: sedimentary, metamorphic, and igneous.
Tomorrow is the start of another long weekend for the students. Have a great three days off!
DON’T FORGET! Monday is our field trip!!!! Come prepared!
Here is a link to the materials list, in case you forgot yours at school.
Mt. Mayon is one of the most famous volcanoes in the Philippines. It is the most active volcano in the country, having erupted 47 times in the last 400 years. Mt. Mayon is a stratovolcano, and is thought of as one of the most picturesque volcanoes in the entire world because of it’s perfectly formed symmetrical cone. It is located in the Albay province of the Philippines. Like other volcanoes in the Philippines it is part of the Pacific Ring of Fire.
The last time Mt. Mayon erupted was in 2008. The most destructive eruption was in 1814. It threw up so much ash and rock into the air that it covered an entire city. Only the bell tower could be seen afterwards. Everything else was buried underneath the rock and burning ash. Another eruption in 1897 sent molten lava down the volcano, where it covered the town of Bacacay under 15m of lava.
Volcanoes are really amazing, but also very frightening. I would hate to be around a volcano when it erupts. They say that Mt. Mayon has not had a huge eruption for many years, and that one may be coming soon. I hope when it does happen, people will be able to escape.
Here is a copy of the checklist you will need to use:
Science Research Project
In a group of 2-3 you will be researching a volcano of your choice. You can use books from the library, as well as the Internet to find your information. Your finished assignment will be placed on the Internet as a blog post, or on our class website.
Here is a checklist of things to include in your report:
1) Name of volcano (1)
2) Location of volcano (where is it? Be specific) (2)
3) Type of volcano (2)
4) What does it look like (describe the volcano in your own words) (5)
5) History of the volcano:
When does it erupt?
Interesting facts
6) Your own thoughts about the volcano (2)
7) Photos / Video of the volcano (2)
8) Spelling/Grammar (2)
9) Effort (2)
10) Group Participation (2)
Take a look at the example on the class blog site. The example I made would receive full marks.
This week sure has gone by fast! In preparation for the cultural fair coming up tomorrow we have been busy researching Pakistan. Luckily Muheeb, Ali, and Maham, all originally from Pakistan, have helped answer the call. We have had the opportunity to write in Urdu, learn (and tomorrow taste!) about the different kinds of food enjoyed in Pakistan, and learn a little more about the religion of Islam. Today we spent part of our afternoon decorating our classroom with a food stand, a slideshow, the Pakistani flag, mosque-style designs, and a lot of written Urdu!
We hope the other classes really appreciate it! I would like to especially thank Maham’s, Ali’s, and Muheeb’s families for their support in making the food for the presentation, as well as offering ideas and support. It’s important to show that Pakistan does have a positive culture to be shared with the world.
Tomorrow is the big day! Let’s hope everything goes smooth!
