The Thirteen Colonies is written by Marc Tyler Nobleman. This is a historical fiction book.  The book explains that the thirteen colonies were the first European settlements in North America in 1776. They were made up by Virginia, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York, Maryland, Rhode Island, Connecticut, Delaware, North Carolina, South Carolina, Pennsylvania and Georgia.  Everybody was seeking fortune in America at the time. This made the story of the thirteen colonies an adventure for the people who lived there. Wars eventually broke out because a fight over ownership of the colonies. Wars were fought in Europe and in North America. The colonists did not want to be ruled by Great Britain and they wanted to be free and Independent. In 1783 the Revolutionary War ended. The colonists won the freedom.

On a scale of 1 to 10, I rate this book a 8.5 because I liked the book and I learned some stuff that I never knew about the war. If you read this book, you would probably rate it an 8.5 too because we have already been taught about the thirteen colonies, so some of this is a repeat of information.  I think the author helped make the subject understandable to 5th graders.  It was an easy book to read. Hopefully other students moving from fourth to fifth grade will read this book for their historical fiction because I enjoyed this book.

Rottweilers by Susan H. Gray was published in 2008 by The Childs World and is an informational book. This book teaches you how to take care of the Rottweiler and there are a lot of interesting facts in this book. It also describes where the Rottweiler came from, how it’s a loyal dog and how they can help people with disabilities, like blindness or paralyzed.

One interesting fact I learned was that the Rottweiler is named after a city called Rottweil. The dogs lived in Rome over 2000 years ago. Another fact is, Rottweilers have broad heads and powerful jaws and weigh over 100 lbs. They have dark brown eyes and watch everything around them. They are very alert and protective of their owners. The third fact is people are known to raise them to be mean and aggressive but they are supposed to be very loyal dogs.

I would rate this book a 10 because I like to learn interesting facts about Rottweilers.  A Rottweiler used to be my favorite dog.  If you ever wanted a Rottweiler, I recommend you read this book first because this book will help you train and teach you how much to feed your dog.

Bulldogs is written by Susan H. Gray. This book is a informational book published in 2008 by the Child’s World.  This book explains everything you want to know about a bulldog.  It describes a bulldogs personality, how to care for it, what the dog looks like and that a bulldog is happy when you treat it right.

There are three interesting things I found about bulldogs from this book.  First, bulldogs cannot live in the heat. They like to be inside because they can have a heat stroke.  When they exercise too much, they start gasping for air.  This is because their noses are smashed in.  Second interesting thing was that bulldogs usually have up to 4 or 5 puppies. They are born weighing the amount of a large apple.  Third thing that is interesting is that a bulldog’s ancestors were mastiffs!  Luckily they eventually got smaller from a large powerful dog to a short stocky dog.

I would rate this book from 1-10 a 10 because I have a bulldog and this book describes her perfectly.  I think that if you are a bulldog lover, this book would be perfect for you because you will learn how to train your own bulldog.

Percy Jackson and The Olympians – The Demigod Files is an adventure book written by Rick Riordan. This book was about a boy named Percy Jackson who went on an adventure with his friends to give a very powerful DemiGod a sword. This sword held special powers that could fight off 1000 demons at once. Percy Jackson was chosen by one of  “The Big Three” because he was born with special powers.  If you want to know what his power are or who “The Big Three” are, you should read this book!

I rate this book on a scale of 1-10, a 10!!  I would recommend this book to people who enjoy adventure and mystery because I think it will take you on an adventure just like it did for me.  I think the author wrote this book because he knew it would get your attention and make you want to keep reading to see where it leads.  If you read just one page of this book, you will not be able to stop becuase it is so amazing.

Whose woods these are,

I think I know.

His house is in the village though.

He will not see me stopping here

to watch his woods fill up with snow.

My little horse must think it queer

to stop without a farmhouse near.

Between the woods and frozen lake

the darkest evening of the year.

he gives his harness bells a shake

to ask if there was some mistake.

the only other sound’s the sweep

Of easy wind and downy flake.

The woods are lovely dark and deep,

but I still have promises to keep,

and miles to go before i sleep

and miles to go before I sleep.

Stopping by the Woods on a snowy evening is by Robert Frost and is a really great poem.  I recommend it because the pictures in the book are great and I like the way that he expresses the poem.   And I also like the poem because it has something to do with winter and right now the seasons are getting colder.

I recited this poem in class and I thought that from all four of the poems that were on the sheet, this was the very best one. So now you can read his poem and you will fall right in love with it. Best poem ever.
