The Thirteen Colonies is written by Marc Tyler Nobleman. This is a historical fiction book. The book explains that the thirteen colonies were the first European settlements in North America in 1776. They were made up by Virginia, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York, Maryland, Rhode Island, Connecticut, Delaware, North Carolina, South Carolina, Pennsylvania and Georgia. Everybody was seeking fortune in America at the time. This made the story of the thirteen colonies an adventure for the people who lived there. Wars eventually broke out because a fight over ownership of the colonies. Wars were fought in Europe and in North America. The colonists did not want to be ruled by Great Britain and they wanted to be free and Independent. In 1783 the Revolutionary War ended. The colonists won the freedom.
On a scale of 1 to 10, I rate this book a 8.5 because I liked the book and I learned some stuff that I never knew about the war. If you read this book, you would probably rate it an 8.5 too because we have already been taught about the thirteen colonies, so some of this is a repeat of information. I think the author helped make the subject understandable to 5th graders. It was an easy book to read. Hopefully other students moving from fourth to fifth grade will read this book for their historical fiction because I enjoyed this book.
