Today, April 15, 2010, is Community Reading Day. We had guest readers come to each classroom to read a book and talk a bit about reading and their jobs. Our Community Readers were:

How are you?

I thought I would look at the pictures of making cookies on the blog. How many cookies did you make? I want to look at the video, but I can’t see it yet.

What is your shoe size? My shoe size is about 21 centimeters.

Do you like soccer?

Do you want to have a Goma-chan [white seal], too? I got Goma-chan when I went skiing. I was very happy! He likes fish. Goma is very small. Goma is very light. Goma-chan is very cute. I can’t bring Goma-chan to school. Japanese schools don’t let us bring toys. Can you have toys in school?

Our UMAINE student teachers taught us some things about non-fiction. We reviewed features like the Table of Contents and the Index. We also learned about the importance of captions on illustrations and words in bold print.

A Big Kid Gives A Book Report

A former student of Room 8 came to visit. He shared his book report on Emily Dickinson with us. MW told us that Emily was “kind of a not very happy person” and that she wrote a lot of poems about nature. He also told us that she lived in Amherst, Massachusetts which is where his grandparents live.
